About this Course

Our world is rapidly changing, the climate is degrading, Eco-systems & habitats are depleting. We the humans are the major factors in this context. The forecast for humans is not that optimistic if we continue in this fashion.

So, what can you do about this as a "Designer" or "Engineer"?

Can we change the situation of the "Environment"?

Yes - You can change this situation. As a "Designer", you are responsible for changing the world to be a better place.

You can design products that are more "Environmentally Sustainable" or follow a concept of Eco-design.

For, taking action you need to have knowledge of the basic concepts of "Sustainability & Sustainable design".

This course is all about learning how to analyse environmental impact of products and reducing their effect using the Solidworks 2018 software.  

Here, in this course, you are going to learn about the basic concepts of "Sustainability & Sustainable design", "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)", principles and guideline for sustainable design, Eco-labeling schemes, Input factors & Impact factors calculated for assessing the environmental performance of a product , Industrial procedure adopted by the designers for producing sustainable products...etc., in the theoretical sessions.

Then in the Solidworks training sessions, you are going to learn about how to asses the environmental sustainability of your designs, using practical product problems inside Solidworks 2018, from which you are going learn how to apply Solidworks 2018 Sustainability tools for producing an Eco-friendly design.

Having knowledge on such an advanced modules in Solidworks software will make you stand out of the crowd of basic Solidworks users.

Basic knowledge
  • Main requirement is the curiosity and interest to learn especially sustainability theory and Solidworks software
  • Basic Engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace or an field related to design) knowledge
  • Solidworks Design Basics. ( Basic info about interface of Solidworks is enough)
  • Access to Solidworks 2014 and above

    In this Lecture, the students will be introduced to the what is design and why Sustainability design concept has evolved. Sustainable design during the useful life of the product. Basic Concepts of Sustainable design.

  • Introduction to Sustainability & Sustainable Design - 2  

     In this Lecture, the students will be introduced to the concept of Sustainable design after the useful life of the product, basic definitions of Sustainability, Sustainability Engineering & Sustainable design.

Guidelines & Principles for Sustainable Design
  • Guidelines to Sustainable Design  

    In this Lecture, Students will be introduced to the Guidelines to be followed while designing Environmentally Sustainable products.

    In this Lecture, Students will be introduced to the Principles adopted to promote the use of sustainability while designing products or buildings. 

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-1  

    Students will be introduced to the concept of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and various stages in LCA. The various stages in LCA are explained with real-world examples.

  • Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-2  

    Students will be learning about the key elements in a performing LCA & what is the scope and boundaries of LCA with a practical example.

  • Impact Metrics in Environmental Assessment  

    Students will Learn in detail about the impact metrics that we consider for assessing the environmental impact of the product or an activity.

  • Implementation of LCA & Sustainable design, Eco-Labeling.  

    Students will learn about the implementation standards for LCA, the concept of eco-labeling and different schemes, pitfalls of LCA.

Industrial Sustainability Design Process

    Students will learn about the design process followed in the industry for designing sustainable products.

Theoretical Introduction to Solidworks Sustainability Software

    Students will be learning the required theoretical background of the Solidworks Sustainability tools.

Sustainability analysis of a Metal Washer
  • Sustainability analysis of a Metal Washer - 1  

    Students will learn about the interface and operation of the sustainability modules inside Solidworks using an example of a metal washer. They also will learn how to set environmental assessment factors as a baseline for comparison with other alternatives.

  • Sustainability analysis of a Metal Washer - 2  

    Students will learn how to select different material alternatives manually and asses their impact using Solidworks Sustainability tools. Then they compare the environmental impact of the new alternate material with the existing baseline values to choose from the best option in terms of Eco-friendliness.

Sustainability analysis of a Plastic container
  • Sustainability analysis of a Plastic container - 1  

    Students will learn how to set up a sustainability study on a plastic part and set the baselines for future analysis using a plastic container design Solidworks Sustainability tools.

  • Sustainability analysis of a Plastic container - 2  

    Students will learn how to use the automated tool inside Solidworks Sustainability module for finding an alternative material with the desired properties to replace the existing material instead of manually selecting it.

Sustainability analysis of a Sheet Metal Base Plate
  • Sustainability analysis of a Sheet Metal Base Plate - 1  

    Students will learn how to set up a sustainability study on a sheet Metal plate and set the baselines for future analysis using Solidworks Sustainability tools.. Learn how to use the automated tool inside Solidworks for finding an alternative material with the desired properties to replace the existing material instead of manually selecting it.

  • Sustainability analysis of a Sheet Metal Base Plate -2  

    Students will compare different design alternatives in terms of product sustainability using Solidworks Sustainability tools. Students will learn to use the use the online sustainability calculator to convert the calculated impact parameter values into human measurable parameter values.

Sustainability analysis of a Car break Assembly & Its Parts
  • Sustainability analysis of a Disc Plate of Car Break Assembly  

    Students will learn how to open an assembly in the Solidworks software, separate the disc plate from the assembly and perform the sustainability analysis on the disc plate of the car brake assembly using Solidworks Sustainability tools.

  • Sustainability analysis of a complete Car Break Assembly  

    Students will learn how to perform sustainability analysis on the complete assembly of a car break using the Solidworks Sustainability tool.

  • Identifying the critical components and reducing it’s impact from the car break  

    Students will learn how to identify and sort parts based on different conditions from the existing assembly and try to reduce their environmental impact using the Solidworks Sustainability tool.

  • Generating & Understanding the Sustainability report  

    Students will learn how to generate and understand the report on the sustainability analysis they performed and share it with others using Solidworks Sustainability tool.
