About this Course

Do People Pay Attention when You Speak?

You want your words to carry weight, you want people to listen to you, you want to speak with authority, you want to be trusted... you even want to be sought out for you opinions, insights and advice.

What you need is gravitas.

And here is where you will learn how to develop it in a simple five step programme.

What are the symptoms?

You know you need to develop more gravitas if people tend to ignore your advice, if people sometimes switch-off when you are speaking, if it seems like they don't trust your judgement.

Who needs gravitas?

If you want to further your career, you need gravitas. It is that commanding impression of authority, judgement and wisdom that people look to when they want a leader, when they need advice, or when someone has to give them confidence in the future.

That can be you...

Do you want:

  • People to take you seriously?
  • To feel confident among older, more experienced colleagues or clients?
  • To hold the attention of a room full of people?
  • A position of trust, influence, and authority?
  • Your ideas and insights to be welcomed and embraced?
  • Promotion at a young age?
  • People to pay attention and take notice of you?
  • You career to move forwards and upwards?

Can Gravitas Be Learned?

We recognize gravitas when we encounter a set of attitudes and behaviors that conform to our expectations of authority, credibility and wisdom. You can learn these attitudes and behaviors, and you will, with this five step course.

What makes gravitas does depend, to a degree, on the culture and society you live and work in. This course is designed for people in Western, English-speaking cultures. But much of the advice will also be true for other cultures.

Think of the INFLUENCE and IMPACT you can have when people seek you out and listen to your views.

Introduction: What is this gravitas thing? And so what?
  • Introduction

Your introduction to this video course, and why you need gravitas.

  • What is Gravitas?

A short definition of what I mean by gravitas, so you know what you are getting.

Step 1: How to Think - If you want people to listen, you need substance
  • The Importance of Attitude

You have to have the right attitude before people will see you as someone with gravitas.

  • The Need for Knowledge

The basis of your authority will be the knowledge, experience and expertise you have to share.

  • The Role of Reliability

People will only perceive you as having gravitas if they also believe they can rely on you.

Step 2: How to Look - Fake it 'til you Become it. Stand and Move with Impact
  • Presence: Space & Pace

What can you do to create the sort of presence in a room that gets you noticed for the right reasons?

  • Posture: Square & Upright

A confident, natural posture conveys gravitas and for most of us, this means being square-on and upright.

  • Poise: Stillness & Calm

What are the elements to the kind of poise you need? And what are the five top body language tells that give you away as lacking confidence and gravitas?

  • Polish: Style & Presentation

Appearances matter, because we all judge each other on on this, before anything else. What are the rules you should be implementing?

Step 3: How to Act: Be the Person People want to Trust
  • The Right Motivation

People will judge your motives, so you need to get this right.

  • Projecting Confidence

Without confidence, you have no gravitas, but it's a subtle thing, so you need to learn the basics of projecting confidence.

  • Pay Attention

Where your attention goes will determine how much other people respect and look up to you.

Step 4: What to Say: Understand the things people want to listen to
  • Structure your Speaking

For maximum gravitas, speak in a structured way that impresses others with your logic and clarity.

  • Simplify the Subject

Your gravitas does not come from the complexity of what you say, but from the ease with which you can make complex ideas seem simple.

  • Stick to Significance

Gravitas means speaking only about what truly matters.

  • Select, Synthesise, Summarise

If you want to add value when you speak, but have nothing new to contribute, there are three ways you can do it...

Step 5: How to Say it: Your Words will Matter when You Choose them with Care
  • Say it with Questions

It is not the answers you give but the questions you ask, that enhance your gravitas.

  • Voice of Authority

How to use your voice to convey gravitas.

  • Choose your Vocabulary

What words will you use when you want to be authoritative?

  • Pace of Delivery

If you want gravitas, slow down.

  • Silence

Silence is more eloquent than any words can ever be.

    ... and more powerful.
